Navigating Rural Grid Challenges:

  1. Single-Phase vs. 3-Phase: Small farm buildings often rely on single-phase or Single-Wire Earth Return (SWER) lines, which restrict generation output. Installing larger systems (above 3.68kW single-phase or 11.04kW 3-phase) requires a formal G99 connection application.

  2. G100 Export Limiting Devices: If local substations face capacity constraints, the DNO may restrict export capacity (e.g., capping export at 30kW on a 100kW solar system). A G100-compliant export limitation system automatically caps grid export while allowing the farm to utilize 100% of the solar generation internally or route it into battery storage.



5. Agricultural Wiring Standards & Safety Compliance

Farm environments subject electrical hardware to harsh conditions, including ammonia fumes, dust, moisture, and washdowns.


Key Compliance Requirements:

  • BS 7671 Section 705: Solar installations on agricultural premises must strictly comply with Section 705 (Agricultural and Horticultural Premises) of the UK wiring regulations. This governs cable containment, mechanical protection against rodents, and specific RCD tripping parameters.

  • Fire Safety & DC Isolation: Inverters and DC isolators are installed in ventilated, dust-proof enclosures situated away from dry hay or straw storage areas to minimize fire risk.

  • MCS & TrustMark Certification: All components and mounting hardware must hold full MCS certification to guarantee structural integrity, validate manufacturer warranties, and enable eligibility for export tariffs and grant schemes.
