Sympathetic Solar for a Georgian Gem in Ripon
When our client in Ripon, North Yorkshire embarked on the ambitious renovation of a beautiful Georgian pigshed, they faced a unique challenge: how to integrate a modern solar energy solution without compromising the building's historic character. The goal was to power both the newly renovated building and the main house, all while navigating a shortage of the rare, 300-year-old handmade tiles needed for the roof.
Think Free Solar designed a bespoke and elegant solution. We installed a 10-panel in-roof solar system, which sits flush with the roofline for a discreet and seamless aesthetic. This clever approach not only looked superb but also solved the tile shortage by replacing a section of the roof, saving the client’s precious original tiles. Our team demonstrated true craftsmanship by hand-making custom lead flashings to ensure a perfect, weatherproof seal that beautifully complements the heritage of the property.
To deliver year-round energy independence, we connected the array to a 3.6 kW inverter and a substantial 16 kWh battery. The large battery is key to the system's success; during winter months when the panels may be shaded, the client can charge the battery with inexpensive, off-peak grid electricity to run their home.
The result is a stunning success. The client has run their property entirely on self-generated power this year. In the summer, they earn money by exporting surplus energy to the grid. This income is projected to cover the cost of their reduced-rate winter usage, effectively eliminating their electricity bill. This project perfectly showcases how thoughtful design can deliver complete energy freedom while honouring our architectural heritage.
